  1. A Sikh Girl’s Bridal Path
    Summary
After having fought with her elder sister at their school, a social worker becomes aware that the 15 year-old Sikh Girl Ranjit is intending to leave her home. Apparently, her parents are discontented with the fact that she has been seeing a Pakistani boy. In order to prevent Ranjit from running away from home, the social worker arranges a meeting with the parents. This meeting, however, proves to be futile since the parents believe that the Pakistani boy has put a spell on Ranjit. With the assistance of the community worker Amarjit, also a Sikh, the social worker also discovers that Ranjit’s parents, without her knowledge, have arranged a marriage for her in India which is expected to break the spell. According to the law, the social worker cannot prevent this from happening, but she tries to hint Ranjit what is under way. The social worker is, however, not sure whether she understands the hint, and after a trip to India Ranjit does not return.

It’s about Ranjit, who is a 15 year old Sikh girl. Ranjit has been in a fight at school, with her older sister, because her older sister had told their parents that Ranjit had been seeing a Pakistan boy. She doesn’t want to go home, so the school called for a social worker. She tells the social worker about the problems at home, and that she doesn’t want to live at home with her parents. The social worker and Ranjit agreed to try to negotiate with her parents. The first negotiation doesn’t go well, because Ranjits parents don’t understand English, and Ranjits older brother translates. They agree to meet again, and the social worker gets permission to bring an interpreter. At the next meeting Ranjit still wants to live away from her parents, but there isn’t anything they can do. The mother tells Amarjit that Ranjit is going to India to get married at the end of the week. The article ‘’A Sikh Girl’s Bridal Path’’ written by Madeleine Fullerton is about a 15-year old Sikh girl Ranjit, who fought with her older sister at school. She discovered that Ranjit was seeing a Pakistani boy after school.
Ranjit wants to leave home because she feels trapped. A social worker is being contacted and she will try to help Ranjit. Ranjit claims that her parents are impossible to compromise with and she was right. After a few dialogs between the parents and the social worker, it is obvious that she is going to India to be married under the pretense of a holiday. The social worker is very sorry for not telling Ranjit to run away from home before the trip. Because of the different cultures the social worker did not act as she would have if it was someone of her own race, who needed help.
